Expected Learning Outcomes—The students will:
1.      Communicate accurately, appropriately, and effectively in speech and writing
2.      Understand and respond appropriately to what is read, heard, and experienced
3.      Develop analysis, synthesis, and inference skills
4.      Develop an appreciation of the written language, both fiction and non-fiction
5.      Recognize and appreciate ways in which writers use language, structure, and form to create and shape meanings and effects
6.      Form original opinions and engage in meaningful discussion

Supplies:
1.      Notebook specifically for English class
a.       A section of a larger notebook or a section in a binder designated for English will also be acceptable
2.      Writing utensils (pens or pencils)
3.      Highlighters

Grading:

Grades will be based upon a multitude of assignments and assessments, including:
1.      In-class work
2.      Participation
3.      Homework
4.      Assessments (quizzes, tests, essays, projects)
Assessments will be weighted towards the overall grade at 70%, and work designated as “other” (in-class work, participation, and homework) will be weighted at 30%.

Grading Scale: Percentage and letter grade correlation are as follows:
94-100—A          87-89—B+          80-83—B-        74-76—C         67-69—D+           60-63—D-
90-93—A-           84-86—B            77-79—C+       70-73—C-        64-66—D            59 or below—E

Classroom Policies and Procedures:

·         Attendance
There is no substitute for actual attendance.  Successful completion of coursework at Big Bay de Noc High School is two-fold:  the student must meet academic standards and exhibit consistent attendance—defined as fewer than ten (10) absences in any class during a semester.  To earn back credit in those classes in which students have more than ten (10) absences, students must make up credit outside the regular school day.  Please review the Student Handbook for specific times, dates, and further information.

·         Tardiness
Students are expected to be in class on time, with required materials out.  If a student must leave the room to retrieve materials for class, the student will be considered tardy.  Students who are tardy eight (8) times in a semester will incur a ten (10) percent deduction from their final semester grade.  Again, more detailed information is available in the Student Handbook.

·         Plagiarism
Academic integrity and honesty are of the highest importance.  Plagiarism is loosely defined as imitating the language and thoughts of another author without proper citation; plagiarism will not be tolerated in any matter.  An automatic “zero” and parent notification will occur on the first offense, and the consequences become more severe for repeat offenders.
o   We will spend time defining and learning about what is considered plagiarism, so there will be no excuses as to why a student may have unintentionally plagiarized.

·         Cheating
Copying homework is a form of cheating, even if you know the information. You will get caught copying homework, and all instances of cheating are documented in a file and presented to administration.  Both parties involved in cheating will receive a “zero” on the assignment as well as parent contact.

·         Behavior
As young adults, you alone are responsible for your actions and decisions and must conduct yourself with respect, responsibility, and integrity. The classroom will be a safe community of learners in which differing student opinions will be listened to and respected.  Understanding literature requires active discussion and listening skills, which all students will practice and master. Offensive and degrading language, behavior, and actions are unacceptable and are not condoned.

 Late/Missing Work:
To be successful both in school and in life, it is crucial that tasks are done completely and on-time.  Any work not turned in on-time, which means at the beginning of the hour, will be worth 50%.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact a classmate AND check the class website.
